Sprinkle of magic in Ipswich Hospital’s wizard wonderland

Staff from an Ipswich Hospital birth suite have worked their wizardry to transform their workplace into a magical, Harry Potter-themed Christmas wonderland.Ipswich Hospital's Harry Potter-themed Ward 5D Birthing Suite

The product of 10 months of preparation, the stunning makeover of the Ward 5D Birthing Suite features countless decorative references to JK Rowling’s famous Harry Potter books, including the Hogwart’s Express, Honeydukes sweet shop, the Forbidden Forest and Dobby.

The concept is the brainchild of Registered Midwife and “huge Harry Potter fan” Kathlena Hall, who said she had spent countless hours working on the project with colleagues Bernadette Penman and Jacinta Atherden.

“We started planning it in February – what we could make and where things would go to make it special – and I’ve been making things since then,” Ms Hall said.

"It was a lot of hours (of work). We had a group of us, eight to 10, who came in on our days off to put it all up one Saturday late last month.

“People are just like ‘It’s amazing’. It makes the unit so nice, people seem happy and are really enjoying it.”

The Hogwart's Express paintingMs Hall said a metres-long painting featuring the Hogwart’s Express and surrounding landscape (pictured left) was the crowning jewel in the display.

“My mum painted that and I’m most proud of what she created,” Ms Hall said.

“It’s amazing, I love it. I also like the Mirror of Erised that I made, too.

“We have been talking about maybe doing a Disney display next year.”
